At the International Aviation Exhibition (ILA) 2022<\/strong> in Berlin, our side event on “Creating an International Marketplace for Sustainable Aviation Fuel”<\/strong> offered a discussion with panelists from Brazil, Kenya and Germany to emphasise Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) as an indispensable element on the road to cleaner aviation, especially in long-distance flights where electrification is not yet feasible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In particular focus was the potentials of a book and claim supply system<\/strong> to enable a global SAF market in a fair and efficient manner. Through this supply system, airlines can purchase SAF production credits so that they do not directly use SAF, but contribute to the compensation of the emissions for which they are responsible. The proposal is a strategy to encourage the production of SAF while the new fuels are consolidating on the global market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

F\u00e1bio Vinhado, Director of Biofuels at the Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy<\/strong>, contributed from the Brazilian perspective that positions itself as a strong producer of SAF. Also participating was Dr Neil Dickson, Head of Environmental Standards at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)<\/strong>, who stressed that such a system would benefit producers as well as offtakers to reach the SAF production capabilities needed to meet carbon emissions targets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The panel also discussed the key elements that will be needed for the operation of a global book and claim system, involving experts from Lufthansa, EDL Anlagenbau GmbH, Deutsche Post\/DHL<\/strong> and European Energy Exchange AG<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
