At least 9 and up to 30 litres of fresh water are required to produce one kilogramme of <strong>hydrogen from water electrolysis<\/strong>. In the long term, the expected increase in water demand due to the expansion of hydrogen production can only be covered by additional water sources or new technologies for utilising wastewater. Given the widespread availability of salt water, desalination can be such an additional source. The <strong>second sustainability briefing<\/strong> looks at the <strong>technology of water desalination, the associated concerns<\/strong> (e.g. environment and acceptance) <strong>and the ways forward<\/strong> for utilising desalination in Power-to-X (PtX) value chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The briefing is aimed at <strong>policy makers, regulators and other stakeholders<\/strong> seeking an introduction to water desalination in the context of PtX.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>More on key aspects of PtX sustainability<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When designing green hydrogen and PtX value chains and policy frameworks, key elements of sustainability must be taken into account to ensure long-term positive impacts for all stakeholders involved. Our sustainability briefings shed light on <strong>environmental, social and economic development opportunities<\/strong> that must be considered for a successful market ramp-up. The briefings were developed in cooperation with experts from the <a href=\"https:\/\/wupperinst.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a
