{"id":30489,"date":"2026-02-12T16:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-12T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ptx-hub.org\/?post_type=publication&#038;p=30489"},"modified":"2026-02-17T12:46:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-17T11:46:13","slug":"modelling-cost-effective-bulk-green-hydrogen-delivery-networks-for-south-africa-and-namibia","status":"publish","type":"publication","link":"https:\/\/ptx-hub.org\/pt-br\/publication\/modelling-cost-effective-bulk-green-hydrogen-delivery-networks-for-south-africa-and-namibia\/","title":{"rendered":"Modelling Cost-Effective Bulk Green Hydrogen Delivery Networks for South Africa and Namibia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This study&nbsp;provides an&nbsp;assessment of cost-effective delivery networks for&nbsp;Power-to-X&nbsp;(PtX)&nbsp;products&nbsp;across South Africa and Namibia.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As both countries aim to become competitive exporters&nbsp;on the&nbsp;PtX&nbsp;market, efficient and scalable delivery infrastructure&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;including pipelines, rail, road, and shipping&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;will be&nbsp;essential&nbsp;to&nbsp;meet&nbsp;their&nbsp;ambitions.&nbsp;Three infrastructure scenarios were analysed: one based on existing infrastructure, and two assuming unconstrained expansion, with and without the development of the&nbsp;Boegoebaai&nbsp;port.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To assess these scenarios, the study employs a spatial cost-optimisation model. It maps the flow of hydrogen from production to consumption nodes and&nbsp;identifies&nbsp;the most cost-effective delivery routes. The model also compares&nbsp;four&nbsp;PtX&nbsp;applications, considering&nbsp;their physical&nbsp;constraints:&nbsp;compressed gaseous hydrogen, liquefied hydrogen, green ammonia,&nbsp;and&nbsp;liquid&nbsp;organic&nbsp;hydrogen&nbsp;carriers. These pathways are examined across three&nbsp;timeframes: 2020, 2040&nbsp;and&nbsp;2050.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key findings&nbsp;indicate&nbsp;that:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The delivery of green ammonia via rail is a relevant&nbsp;option&nbsp;in South Africa and Namibia, provided&nbsp;that&nbsp;the demand for green ammonia is high enough.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Coordination between South Africa and Namibia is crucial to strengthen&nbsp;PtX&nbsp;infrastructure&nbsp;in the Northern Cape&nbsp;ahead of&nbsp;the&nbsp;development of the&nbsp;Boegoebaai&nbsp;port.&nbsp;<\/li><li>A deeper integrated&nbsp;PtX&nbsp;ecosystem&nbsp;can&nbsp;benefit&nbsp;both countries.&nbsp;Pipelines are not the only&nbsp;option;&nbsp;rail could&nbsp;also&nbsp;play a vital role&nbsp;as a north-south corridor.&nbsp;<\/li><li>In South Africa\u2019s interior,&nbsp;PtX&nbsp;production facilities&nbsp;could&nbsp;operate&nbsp;independently&nbsp;from the national network,&nbsp;if&nbsp;constraints about renewable energy supply are addressed.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the modelling results, the study offers a robust framework for future scenario testing&nbsp;and&nbsp;concludes&nbsp;with recommendations,&nbsp;highlighting the need to&nbsp;assess&nbsp;the infrastructure readiness&nbsp;for large-scale ammonia transport.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This study&nbsp;provides an&nbsp;assessment of cost-effective delivery networks for&nbsp;Power-to-X&nbsp;(PtX)&nbsp;products&nbsp;across South Africa and Namibia.&nbsp;&nbsp; As both countries aim to become competitive exporters&nbsp;on<a class=\"read-more\" href=\"https:\/\/ptx-hub.org\/pt-br\/publication\/modelling-cost-effective-bulk-green-hydrogen-delivery-networks-for-south-africa-and-namibia\/\" target=\"_blank\">Read More<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":27,"featured_media":30525,"menu_order":1,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[572,573],"ptxproject":[],"publicationauthor":[],"publicationtag":[],"publicationtopic":[],"publicationformat":[260],"publicationcommissioner":[620],"publicationcontributor":[602,626,627],"ptxcountry":[71,133],"language":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v16.0.2 -
