Webinar: International perspectives on large-scale and decentralised green ammonia production

Ammonia is a cornerstone of the global chemical industry, essential for fertilisers, energy storage, fuels and emerging applications in the hydrogen economy. However, the way in which ammonia is produced – and the scale at which it is produced – is undergoing significant change. Traditional large-scale, centralised production facilities are being complemented by innovative small-scale technologies tailored to local needs and resources.

DECHEMA e.V., under the umbrella of the International PtX Hub, organised an insightful panel discussion on international perspectives on large- and small-scale ammonia production on November 13, 2024. After a keynote speech by Marc van Doorn, Ammonia Europe, on the current state and future perspectives of green ammonia, a panel discussion was held with experts from the industry. The panelists were Marc van Doorn, Ammonia Europe and Fertiberia, Dr Kerry McLaughlin, Nium, John Nutt, Hive Energy, Catalina Machicao, Austria Energy and Vahid Monadjem, Talus Renewables. Elisabeth Kriegsmann, Advisor at the International PtX Hub moderated the webinar. The panel explored:

• The role of large-scale ammonia production in meeting global demand and the key factors to ensure cost competitiveness.
• The impact on economies of scale for green ammonia production facilities.
• How small-scale technologies can support localised solutions, e.g. for fertiliser production or energy needs.
• The integration of renewable energy sources in both approaches to drive the transition to decarbonisation.
• How intermittency affects ammonia synthesis and possible solutions.
• Regional priorities, technological advances and challenges, and policy needs that are shaping the future of ammonia production.
