Interactive tool: Map of CO2 sources in South Africa
The interactive tool identifies point carbon sources in the form of CO₂ across South Africa, providing crucial data on their quantity, location, and type. This information is key for optimising carbon utilisation and accelerating the development of Power-to-X (PtX) projects in the country.
South Africa is a major CO₂ emitter, primarily due to coal-fired power generation and energy-intensive industries. Showcasing the potential to utilise these carbon sources for PtX applications supports global defossilisation efforts and contributes to the transition toward carbon neutrality.
A detailed spatial database of CO₂ industrial point sources from key sectors such as power, petrochemicals, cement, and steel was developed, providing information on their location and emission volumes, along with a clear distinction between fossil-based and biogenic sources. The map is a continuation of the study Carbon Sources for PtX Products and Synthetic Fuels in South Africa.
Carbon emissions were sourced from industry reports and publicly available data. Where direct data was unavailable, estimates were derived using standard emission factors and production capacities. Key sectors covered include power, petrochemicals, steel, ferroalloys, cement, aluminium, pulp & paper, sugar, bioethanol, and biogas.
