Defossilising aviation with e-SAF: introduction to technologies, policies, and markets for sustainable aviation fuels

This publication developed with our partner Agora Verkehrswende, "Defossilising Aviation with e-SAF," examines the role of synthetic e-SAF in transitioning aviation away from fossil fuels. It provides an overview of the current state of research, and gives insights from technology through policies to concrete market opportunities.

One of the key highlights is the need for establishing rigorous sustainability standards for e-SAF production and use, ensuring that these fuels are socially and environmentally responsible. Comprehensive sustainability criteria are essential to guide the development and implementation of e-SAF technologies.

Given the technical limitations of alternative propulsion systems, Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) remain indispensable for defossilising aviation, particularly for long-haul flights. The study accentuates the necessity of rapid expansion in e-SAF production, driven by industry and investors, once suitable political frameworks are in place. A comprehensive strategy that addresses all aspects of e-SAF production, including renewable energy generation and sustainable carbon sourcing, is critical for effective implementation. This approach goes beyond focusing solely on regions with optimal conditions for e-SAF production.

The analysis underscores the importance of international cooperation and robust regulatory frameworks to support the market ramp-up of e-SAF and prevent market fragmentation. Policymakers are urged to adopt comprehensive regulatory packages and ensure international collaboration to facilitate the transition to sustainable aviation fuels. Only by addressing both CO2 and non-CO2 impacts, and by promoting the rapid development and adoption of e-SAF, the aviation sector can make significant strides towards achieving its climate goals and ensuring a sustainable future for air travel.
