Kenya’s path to a Power-to-X economy: a skills development perspective
The study analyses how to advance Kenya's Power-to-X (PtX) sector by upskilling staff at universities and vocational training institutions, enhancing professional development, and fostering industry-academia collaboration. Key initiatives include providing workshops, industry exchanges, internships, and tailored training programmes to address skill gaps. Efforts are directed towards enhancing apprenticeship programmes, on-the-job training, and empowering unemployed TVET graduates through job opportunities in the PtX sector.
Additionally, the study accentuates establishing Centers of Excellence and enhancing research and development (R&D) initiatives to drive innovation. This includes creating dedicated PtX training centers, fostering interdisciplinary research, and facilitating partnerships among universities, research institutions, and industry stakeholders. The study also analyses options to secure diverse financing opportunities, promote gender-inclusive career pathways, and support entrepreneurship through targeted skills development programmes and incubation initiatives.
To ensure effective implementation, the study outlines milestones aligned with Kenya's national Green Hydrogen Strategy, focusing on immediate skills enhancement, market growth consolidation, and preparing the workforce for advanced roles. These efforts are supported by collaborations with local and international partners, leveraging expertise and resources to build a skilled workforce capable of driving the PtX sector's sustainable growth in Kenya.
