Siemens Brazil, Cocal, and GIZ Brazil have joined forces to integrate the production of green hydrogen and renewable fuels into Brazil’s sugarcane ethanol industry – marking an important step toward accelerating the country’s sustainable energy transition. During COP in Belém, the partners signed a letter of interest to collaborate under the International Hydrogen Ramp-up Programme (H2Uppp) of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.
The partnership aims to assess and demonstrate how sugarcane-based ethanol production can be effectively coupled with green hydrogen and Power-to-X (PtX) technologies. The goal is to develop a scalable, replicable model to drive industrial decarbonisation across Brazil. If successful, this model could become a strategic blueprint for future large-scale hydrogen and renewable fuel projects, strengthening Brazil–Germany cooperation in clean energy.
Roles of the partners
- Siemens Brazil will provide expertise in automation, digitalisation, and smart infrastructure to drive technological integration.
- Cocal, known for its leadership in renewable energy, biogas, and biomethane, will contribute technical, economic, and operational insights.
- GIZ Brazil will oversee quality assurance and ensure alignment with the objectives of the H2Uppp programme.
