Transport Events at COP25 in Madrid
According to UN Environment’s latest Emissions Gap Report, current ambition under the Paris Agreement are not enough to limit global warming to 1.5°C. Even if all current unconditional commitments were to be implemented, temperatures are expected to rise by 3.2°C – which would bring about even more catastrophic and destructive climate impacts. To meet the climate targets we need to ramp up ambition more than fivefold over current levels.
At the 25th Conference of the Parties (COP25) under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), being held from December 2-13, 2019, delegates will set the scene and lay the groundwork for 2020, when countries submit their national climate commitments (NDCs) to the UNFCCC. In Madrid, among decisions on topics such as the international carbon markets, climate leaders will have the opportunity to take on a can-do approach and build momentum ahead of 2020 when the world expects an increase in ambition of climate action. The transport sector plays an important role for climate action. Currently, it contributes roughly one quarter of global energy related greenhouse gas emissions. Without rapid and ambitious mitigation action, transport emissions could more than double by 2050.
The Changing Transport team is attending COP 25 and embraces the Chilean COP Presidency’s motto “Time for action”: GIZ co-organizes the Transport Day on December 6, opened by COP President Carolina Schmidt in the Chilean Pavilion and contributes to an event in the German Pavilion called “Power-to-X: The missing building-block for full decarbonisation” with Svenja Schulze, the German Minister for the Environment, on December 10.
Events on scaling up low carbon urban mobility in Latin America

GIZ transport co-organizes several of the 45 events that will be held in the EUROCLIMA+ pavilion, a program funded by the EU. In cooperation with the MobiliseYourCity Partnership, a multi-donor initiative funded by the EU, the German Ministry for Environment and the French Facility for Global Environment as well as the French Ministry for Ecologic Transition and Solidarity, various events on low carbon urban mobility in Latin America will showcase how to scale up ambition in urban mobility.

Managing Climate Risk in the Transport Sector

Transport Day

Transport is a key pillar in the agenda of COP25 and on December 6, the Chilean UNFCCC COP25 Presidency will host Transport Day in the Chilean pavilion with an opening by Chilean Minister of Environment and UNFCCC COP President Carolina Schmidt, and Vice Minister of Transport, José Luis Domínguez. After the high-level opening, participants will discuss how to increase climate ambition in the transport sector in three sessions: First, a discussion will be held about the sector’s vision and what needs to be done to bridge its mitigation gap. Then, participants will work in a world café session on how to address implementation challenges. The last session will zoom in on what the transport community must deliver throughout 2020 – the year of NDC revisions and the global stock take. The BMU funded project Moving Chile together with SLoCaT on behalf of the Paris Process on Mobility and Climate (PPMC) are co-organizing the event.

Prioritizing mitigation actions in the transport and buildings sectors

The event will present how emissions quantification can be used to identify priority mitigation actions and to set sectoral mitigation targets for the NDC. This includes the presentation of the UNFCCC Compendium on GHG baselines and monitoring including the transport and building volumes, jointly developed with GIZ, as well as country experiences on scenario processes. Power-to-X: The missing building block for full decarbonization

The objectives of this side event are to raise awareness on opportunities and risks of the PtX technology and highlight the role PtX can play in countries long-term strategies. Stakeholders will learn about BMU’s international PtX Network and countries’ representatives can consider opportunities and risks of PtX for their national long-term strategies.
