Availability of water resources in the development of green hydrogen and its derivatives in Chile

This report provides an overview of the interaction between water resources and the production of green hydrogen and derivatives in Chile, highlighting the importance of technological, environmental and social factors to ensure sustainable development. Its approach makes it a guide to orient future projects to obtain water for the green hydrogen industry and its derivatives, contributing to the advance towards a more sustainable economy and aligned with the fight against climate change.

These criteria must address environmental aspects, protecting marine life and considering the impacts of desalination, as well as proper waste management. In addition, the aim is to avoid water stress in the regions involved, promoting non-conventional water sources and reuse of effluents when feasible. In economic terms, direct and indirect costs must be considered, together with social and environmental benefits to ensure the profitability of the projects. From a social perspective, the introduction of a new industry that depends on water resources should be taken into account, without compromising access to water for local communities, and seeking synergies such as multipurpose desalination plants or water reuse in agriculture and landscaping.
