Decarbonisation and allocation scenarios for low emission hydrogen and Power-to-X in Argentina

What could the energy transition in Argentina look like by 2050? The study outlines a range of detailed pathways/scenarios to inform how hydrogen and Power-to-X (PtX) products can contribute to the defossilisation of the country’s power, heat, transport and industrial sectors, as well as the potential for hydrogen exports.

The study was developed in three steps:

  • Scenario definition: Proposing a general framework and detailed assumptions for three long-term pathways reflecting different levels of ambition for total CO2 emissions reduction, and analysing the main routes towards decarbonisation of the energy sector as a whole.
  • Modelling: Detailed modelling and simulation of the electricity and hydrogen systems for three main pathways. This was done using Artelys Crystal Super Grid modelling tool.
  • Simulation: The simulation of nine sensitivities, to test the robustness of the results and account for the large uncertainties on the future evolution of techno-economic parameters of the hydrogen production.

As part of the development of Argentina's National Hydrogen Strategy, the findings of the study were considered in the development process.

The study was conducted by GME-EEC and the Artelys France under the umbrella of the International PtX Hub.
