Powering clean shipping: Kenya in the global power-to-x economy
The report provides an extensive analysis into Kenya’s potential to become a regional leader in green shipping.
Kenya possesses abundant renewable energy resources such as wind, solar and geothermal, which make a solid basis for producing green hydrogen and Power-to-X products, such as e-fuels for shipping.
Additionally, Kenya has political ambitions to develop a low-carbon transport sector, a National Action Plan (NAP) for maritime decarbonisation, and an established shipping sector. This makes Kenya an ideal candidate to become a regional bunkering hub for e-fuels, partner for green shipping corridors, and generate green jobs for economic and sustainable growth.
The report assesses those potentials:
- Techno-economic analysis of e-fuels and their production costs
- Guide to identify and assess potential Green Shipping Corridors
- Examination of job creation potential
Conclusions are:
- Kenya can produce e-ammonia at globally competitive costs, which also could benefit fertiliser production.
- Two routes were shortlisted as most viable shipping corridors: Cut flowers to the Netherlands, and coffee to Germany.
- A green hydrogen sector and e-fuels production present a significant opportunity for job creation and local economic growth.
Along with quantitative studies of Kenya’s technical and economic feasibilities, workshops and interviews with stakeholders were also conducted. In this way, the report obtains crucial insights into both supply and demand of e-fuels, and to holistically estimate the viability of a Green Shipping Corridor in Kenya.
