Sustainability Briefing #4: Benefits for local communities in the context of Power-to-X

The development of a renewable Power-to-X (PtX) economy can help defossilise national industry and bring significant socio-economic benefits to a country. In terms of a just transition, particular consideration should be given to the impact on the communities where the green hydrogen and PtX plants and infrastructure (e.g. renewable energy and desalination plants, grids and pipelines) are located. The fourth sustainability briefing looks at the potential positive impact on local communities and how this can also serve investors and project developers. Levers and approaches for realising benefit sharing are presented.

The briefing is aimed at policy makers, regulators and other stakeholders seeking an introduction to realising benefits for local communities in the context of PtX.

More on key aspects of PtX sustainability

When designing green hydrogen and PtX value chains and policy frameworks, key elements of sustainability must be taken into account to ensure long-term positive impacts for all stakeholders involved. Our sustainability briefings shed light on environmental, social and economic development opportunities that must be considered for a successful market ramp-up. The briefings were developed in cooperation with experts from the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy.
