Towards a green shipping gateway: establishing a green hydrogen economy in Egypt

Decarbonising global maritime trade is crucial for reaching climate goals and mitigating climate change. Egypt has a significant role in maritime trade, as 12 % of international trade passes through the Suez Canal. Firstly, the study discusses the potential impact of green fuels on shipping. Secondly, it analyses the potentials and challenges green shipping offers for Egypt from the geopolitical and economic perspective. Thirdly, it discusses how a shipping-based hydrogen economy can be embedded in Egypt’s domestic economy. The study concludes with policy recommendations on how Egypt might utilise its full potential in green shipping.
