Carbon is becoming an increasingly important resource as governments and industry pave the way to a fossil-free future with Power-to-X (PtX). Besides green hydrogen, sustainable carbon is an important feedstock for the production of e-fuels and other PtX products. The current primary methods for carbon sourcing (Direct Air Capture (DAC), biogenic sources, and Carbon Capture (CCU)) each have their advantages and disadvantages, emphasising the need for a regulatory framework to ensure that both hydrogen and carbon are produced in a sustainable manner. This highlights the need to also assess the practicalities in country contexts, considering factors such as available carbon sources, existing infrastructure, economic viability of each source and the demand landscape in the country and regional context.

Join our official partner event ‘Carbon Sourcing for Power-to-X: How can we meet the demand for sustainable value chains?‘ at the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue on 18 March 2024 (5:00-8:00 pm CET). Government representatives from Asia, Germany, Latin America and Southern Africa will discuss their ambitions and priorities with the private sector and academia. The panel discussion (5:00-6:30 pm CET) will be followed by a networking reception (6:30-8:00 pm CET; onsite only).
