The majority of international trade relies on shipping, which contributes around two to three percent of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. There are global and European goals and regulations in place to move towards a carbon-neutral future. Are regulations alone sufficient to drive climate neutrality in maritime transport? What measures are necessary to shift from traditional heavy oils and fossil fuel marine diesel to more environmentally friendly alternatives? How do PtX fuels factor into this transition? Additionally, can the implementation of green shipping corridors create a sustainable market ecosystem?

To get to the bottom of these questions, we hosted a three-part webinar series ‘PtX Lab Talk+ Technologies, policies and fuels for fossil-free maritime transport‘ in collaboration with Agora Verkehrswende and PtX Lab Lausitz.

Webinar 1/3: Green Shipping Corridors and Country Case Studies

19 July 2023 from 3:00 – 4:30 pm (UTC+2)
Organised by the International PtX Hub

Green shipping corridors are shipping routes powered by zero-carbon emissions ships. Designed as cooperation between shippers, ports, governments and energy suppliers, they turn climate ambitions into action. The speakers discussed setting up a Green Shipping Corridor with various stakeholders, looked at infrastructure requirements and the business opportunities for energy companies and ports and talked hands-on about establishing a PtX ecosystem.

Our inputs:

  • Marieke Beckmann, Senior Programme Lead, First Movers at the Global Maritime Forum
Strategies and Business Models for Developing Green Shipping Corridors
  • Vanessa Davidson, Special Project Manager at Freeport Saldanha, South Africa
The development of the South Africa-European Union Iron Ore Corridor Initiative

Webinar 2/3: Maritime Climate Mitigation Options – Technologies and Fuels

2 August 2023 from 3:00 – 4:30 pm (UTC+2)
Organised by Agora Verkehrswende

The webinar discussed technological options for reducing the climate impact of maritime transport. This included advances in ship efficiency and innovative technologies, as well as the different characteristics of various fuel options, associated sustainability issues, and the challenges to bringing them to market.

Our inputs:

  • Constance Dijkstra, Shipping Campaigner, Transport & Environment
  • Shaghayegh Kazemi Esfeh, Researcher, Institute of Maritime Energy Systems
  • Nora Wissner, Researcher, Öko-Institut

Webinar 3/3: Climate Change and Shipping – International Ambitions and Regulations

10 August 2023 from 1:00 – 2:30 pm (UTC+2)
Organized by PtX Lab Lausitz.

The webinar highlighted the impact of the shipping sector on climate change. Special attention was given to international regulation. In particular, the ambitions of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to reduce greenhouse gases were discussed. In addition, speakers addressed the results of the recent Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 80) and the targets already set by parts of the shipping industry.

Our inputs:

  • Dr Tristan Smith, Researcher at University College London (UCL)
The regulation of international shipping – the role of the IMO and the inevitable increasing political pressure for the sector to achieve a 1.5-aligned pathway of GHG reduction
  • Daniel Barcarolo, Head of Regulatory Affairs at Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping
MEPC 80 key decisions, implications and the IMO’s upcoming workload
  • Faïg Abbasov, Shipping programme director at Transport & Environment
EU’s FF55 package and projected fuel mix for EU shipping
