Green hydrogen and Power-to-X (PtX) technologies have become the promising solution to defossilise the energy sector and reduce carbon emissions, specifically in those energy-intensive sectors that cannot be electrified. The Arab region, with its abundant renewable energy resources and strategic geographic location, has shown its enormous potential to become a key player in the global green hydrogen and PtX markets. To advance on this frontrunner position, the International PtX Hub is partnering up with the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE) to unlock the possibilities of green hydrogen and PtX in the Arab region.

Strategic partnership with RCREEE signed during the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue 2023

The signing ceremony took place after the International PtX Hub partner event of the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue (BETD), focused on “Empowering Partner Countries through Power-to-X – Joint Pathways towards a Sustainable Future”. RCREEE is the intergovernmental and official technical arm of the League of Arab States in sustainable energy-related matters.  The PtX Hub was honored to have Dr. Jauad El Kharraz, representing RCREEE, in both the panel discussion of the partner event and signing ceremony. Dr. El Kharraz highlighted successful examples in the MENA regions that increased their renewable energy production such as Egypt, Morocco, and Jordan, and explained the current objectives of his organisation. During his intervention, he explained the current objectives of his organisation, putting the emphasis on the importance of developing regulatory and certification frameworks, and the promotion of the appliances’ local manufacture. These are shared ambitions. The partnership aspiration is to create a solid ground floor for the emerging PtX markets in the Arab region, strengthening the current momentum of PtX in Arab countries and supporting a just energy transition.

First activity: a train-of-trainers programme

To reach the agreement objectives, the first activity is already planned. To further enhance human capacities on topics around the entire value chain of PtX in the Arab region, the International PtX Hub is carrying out a train-of-trainers programme. The goal is to train professors, other experts in the field of renewable energy, hydrogen, and PtX end-use sectors on the potentialities of renewable PtX in future energy systems and economies.

This initiative, that will help to build a strong human resource base is only one of the many contemplated. The strategic agreement is structured in six differenciated objectives to support the PtX market development in the region. These goals cover several working areas as policy, finance, knowledge dissemination, and guidelines, among others.
