The German-Brazilian partnership for sustainable development goes back a long way. For more than half a century the two countries have been cooperating on renewable energies and energy efficiency, among other topics. Regarding the global drive to decarbonise the energy system, green hydrogen and Power-to-X are major allies. As a strategy to facilitate the understanding of the potential of these technologies, the International PtX Hub Berlin now offers training for partners of the German technical cooperation worldwide.
In April, partners of the ProQR Project in Brazil had the opportunity to participate in the pilot training of this initiative. The Green Hydrogen and Power-to-X training aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the value chain and opportunities of these new technologies in the energy systems of the future. Members of various institutions from the State of Paraná participated. Among them, local specialists who work in institutions such as Fundação Araucária, CIBiogás, Sanepar, Copel, Universidade Livre do Meio Ambiente (Unilivre), Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR), Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná (UTFPR), Parque Tecnológico de Itaipu (PTI) and IDR-PR. During four days of high-level technical input, the course culminated in a transfer workshop. In an intense exchange, the challenges and possible solutions for the implementation of the Power-to-X production chain in the Paraná region were discussed.
At the end of the training, the participants are now qualified to effectively assess the potential for production, application and export of green H2 and PtX, as well as the importance of sustainability criteria. The exchange of German and Brazilian expertise took into account the local strengths of Paraná and promises to bear concrete fruit in the coming years.
Prof. Dr. – Ing. Christoph Menke, professor for Energy Systems, Technologies and Economics at the Trier University of Applied Sciences, conducted the training. For the course provider, Thomas Elmar Schuppe, Senior Consultant for Training and Capacity Development at the International PtX Hub Berlin, the training was a success:
“With the completion of the Green Hydrogen & PtX course, the International PtX Hub Berlin has taken an important step towards its goal of creating a critical mass of well-versed people worldwide who have a high level of professional competence on the topic of green H2 and PtX, are enthusiastic about green H2 and PtX and convinced that humanity can maintain and expand its prosperity without fossil fuels.”

Professor Dr. Christoph Menke also mentioned the importance of how the issue of sustainability is addressed:
“A crucial element of the course is to look intensively at the issue of sustainability in all its dimensions, which we consider of fundamental importance for the future production and use of Hydrogen and PtX.”

As the German-Brazilian technical cooperation (GIZ), implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, develops more and more projects related to the Hydrogen and PtX theme in Brazil, the partnership with the International PtX Hub in the realization of the training is of great value in order to level technical knowledge within the partnerships.
For this reason, a second edition of the training will be held in June, with political partners of ProQR and other projects in the Energy Cluster at GIZ Brazil. In addition, we are working on solutions to offer the course on a larger scale and in Portuguese in the future.
