Sustainable aviation fuels, better known as SAF, are ready for take-off. In the coming years, a drastic increase in the share of SAF is expected; but the implications that this increase will have on the environment and sustainable development is still quite unknown.

Want to gain a holistic understanding of how switching from fossil fuels to sustainable fuels in aviation would affect sustainability aspects such as land and water use? To enable this, we at the PtX Hub just launched the PtX.AviationCalculator, a user-friendly calculator that shows the fuel consumption between customisable flight routes and illustrates the impact of switching to PtL for those flights. In order to fill in some prevailing gaps in our knowledge of PtL, the calculator visualises those impacts and brings us one step closer to holding educated discussions about the future of PtL for aviation.

The PtX.AviationCalculator is aimed at those:

  • interested in the environmental impact of the transition from fossil to sustainable fuels in aviation;
  • who want to evaluate their own assumptions on the topic of PtL in aviation;
  • who want a quick and custom cost estimate on flights using PtL.

One of our key objectives at the PtX Hub is to sensitise on the sustainability dimensions and concerns of ramping up PtX production and markets and to support the development of truly climate-neutral as well as socially and environmentally beneficial PtX. Aviation is a vital sector, accounting for more than 2 % of all human-induced carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
