Ammonia Paper #2: Ammonia transport and storage

In order to develop and optimise ammonia supply chains, it is key to understand the methodologies and technologies of ammonia logistics. The second paper of our ammonia series delves into the aspects of ammonia storage and transport. The first chapter examines various pressure storage methods and compares their respective advantages and disadvantages. Chapter two looks at factors such as safety, cost-effectiveness and environmental impact of various transport modes, ranging from traditional methods such as pipeline transport to ocean and barge transport, rail and truck transport.

The paper is aimed at Power-to-X (PtX) enthusiasts and experts who want to delve into the technological landscape surrounding ammonia logistics. By offering insights into storage options and transportation modes, the paper fosters a more sustainable and efficient utilisation of this versatile chemical compound.

More from the Ammonia Paper Series

Ammonia is a global commodity, and infrastructures for its storage and transportation already exist worldwide. This makes ammonia a cost-effective and promising renewable energy and hydrogen carrier. Our ammonia paper series provides insights on ammonia production, transport, storage and use for a low-carbon, sustainable energy future. The series was developed in cooperation with the Nitric Acid Climate Action Group.
